In late October 1989, Chesapeake Bay Academy was founded by sixty parents who were united in their commitment to
create a safe learning environment in which their children were known,
appreciated, and understood. They developed a sense of what the school should be, a
vision of the future, and they implemented strategies to take the school in that direction.
They designed a school that encouraged parents and adults to work
together at all levels. From the outset, family involvement was critical to success. A letter to the parents of all students on November 8, 1989, affirmed:
"The Board of Trustees firmly believes that a healthy communications link between the
Board and the parents will be the cornerstone of our strength and will serve to ensure
the success of Chesapeake Bay Academy."
We continue to believe that personal relationships among children, parents, and school
adults are at the heart of teaching and learning; that we, the important adults in
their lives, must believe in them, reach out to them, and challenge them to be the best
they can be.
Now into our 18th year as a day school educating bright students, including those with learning differences and attention disorders, the school has served more than 1,200 families, graduated eight classes from the 12th grade, built and occupied a three-story, 50,000 sq. ft., state-of-the-art building, achieved Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS) accreditation, and launched The Dominion Education Center to provide supplemental services to additional families throughout Hampton Roads.
With each new year, we renew the commitment and the passion that originally created Chesapeake Bay Academy, and we celebrate as our capable, creative students flourish under the guidance of parents and school adults.
