Upper school students at Chesapeake Bay Academy have the opportunity to create and run their own business. 
In 2015 CBA launched MAKE CBA, a hands-on curriculum that fosters motivation, knowledge and skills, empowering students to succeed in school and beyond. MAKE CBA is a year-long program that includes hands-on, interactive sessions and in-depth mentoring by CBA faculty and seasoned entrepreneurs. CBA is pioneering an intellectual environment in which students who are differently-abled can “think outside of the box” and explore learning in ways that are better suited to their learning styles. Students in the program build their knowledge in science, math, technology and business while embracing the core competencies of design thinking connected to the 6 C’s of 21st Century Education:

  • Cosmopolitanism

What does it take to turn an idea into a successful business?

Tinkering - Tinkering is the art of constructing, and sometimes deconstructing, objects in our physical world to explore, adapt and innovate. While tinkering began with traditional tools and techniques, it now includes digital technologies, as well. In MAKE CBA, students integrate standard building materials with micro-processors, electromagnets, sensors and motors to generate exciting, new products.

Design Thinking - Empathize…Define…Ideate…Prototype…Test. This is the design thinking model.  Design Thinking is a methodology that teaches individuals new strategies to solve problems. Developed at the Stanford, students learn to make connections between what they learn in class and the world beyond. MAKE CBA is built upon this model.

Planning - Creating a business plan, designing marketing materials and developing a financial model are all integral to the MAKE program. Utilizing the Junior Achievement “Company Program”, students develop a product then organize and operate a business from product launch through liquidation.

Collaboration - In conjunction with the mechanical and design skills necessary for success in business, there is a set of personal skills necessary to conduct a successful business. The ability to communicate efficiently, probe effectively, provide meaningful feedback, disagree respectfully – all of these skill sets are addressed through the MAKE CBA process.

Empowering students with skills & self-confidence is at the core of the CBA mission. School can be difficult for many CBA students because they have dyslexia or other language-based learning differences. These students’ strengths lie in the visual-spatial realm. MAKE CBA emphasizes the principles of multisensory teaching and learning that our school is built on, allowing kids to get hands-on with the content, providing real-life applications that our students can effectively understand and implement. Participation in the program builds self-esteem and motivates our students to succeed across the curriculum.
