History
In October of 1989, 60 parents united by their commitment to create a learning environment where their children would be known, appreciated, and most of all, understood, founded the Chesapeake Bay Academy. Located in a shopping center in Norfolk, Virginia, the parents and staff passionately pursued their philosophy that personal relationships among children, parents, faculty, and staff are at the heart of teaching and learning.
CBA moved from our original location in 1993 to leased classroom space in the Heritage United Methodist Church on Baker Road. We went on to achieve accreditation by the Virginia Association of Independent Schools (VAIS), and finally settled in our current 50,000 square-foot state-of-the-art home in Virginia Beach. Yes, we’ve grown a bit since our beginnings. We educate one of the most diverse student populations on the Eastern seaboard and have served more than 1,200 families, graduated eight classes from the 12th grade, and launched the Dominion Education Center to provide supplemental services to additional families throughout Hampton Roads. CBA is fully licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to serve students with Other Health Impairment (OHI), ADHD, and Specific Learning Disabilities.
However, we still adhere to that philosophy that started in that shopping center. Each year we renew the commitment and the passion that originally created Chesapeake Bay Academy, and we celebrate as capable, creative students grow and reach their full potential under the guidance of our parents, faculty, and staff.
