The Chesapeake Bay Academy School-to-Work Program is designed to add another dimension to the total leaning experience at our school. In their third trimester of each year, all students in grades 9-12 spend three weeks during school hours working at jobs in the community. An important aspect of our program is matching students’ interests to "corresponding positions" in area businesses. Currently, there are over 150 different placements, and over the course of four years in CBA’s Upper School, the student is placed in four different work environments.
The School-to-Work Program is a very empowering experience for our students. Our students learn that they can be successful in the real world, and come to understand that there is a place for them in the workforce. Many continue with the respective companies in summer jobs, and some eventually go on to work full-time with the company after graduation.
Each year the program begins with training and career advice through our affiliation with the Junior Achievement program. Throughout the academic year, members of the business community visit the school and advise students on the critical steps in the job application process and on social skills needed when interviewing for employment. Students receive guidance on resume writing, dressing for an interview, and conducting themselves during the interview.
At an orientation breakfast, the students meet a staff member from the company who serves as their personal mentor throughout the course of the program. Much like our instructors, their mentor in the workplace advises, encourages, and educates the student. At the end of the program, CBA conducts a special event where each student presents a project back to the company based on their work experience.
At Chesapeake Bay Academy, we view both our School-to-Work and our affiliation with the Junior Achievement programs as not just short-term preparation for employment, but as a foundation for lifelong career and social success.
