Summer Learning

Summer Learning is a remedial program designed to avoid "summer slide" - the tendency of students to lose ground in reading, math and writing during the summer months. A recent study by Harris Cooper, Professor of Psychological Sciences at the University of Missouri, estimates that over the summer, students lose about one month on an equivalent grade scale. In math, the study shows students lose approximately 2.6 months of grade-equivalent math skills over the summer months.
 
On average, students tend to slip in reading and math because they don't have an opportunity to practice these skills during the summer. Summer Learning provides the perfect opportunity for students to participate in a program that concentrates on improving math, reading, and writing skills.

Chesapeake Bay Academy's Summer Learning is a remedial program that uses the same techniques that are so effective in our traditional curriculum - small classes and individual tutors that allow one-on-one interaction with the students. CBA uses specialized programs that stress phonics and fluency, grammar, comprehension, vocabulary, writing and math. By concentrating in these areas, we give our students a renewed sense of academic independence. Students in our Summer Learning program are pre-tested to help determine their current performance levels and identify problems they may have with reading. We then develop an individualized learning plan to best address their needs.

Chesapeake Bay Academy's Summer Learning strives to give the students the opportunity for immediate success. We use learning materials that are engaging and relevant to keep students interested throughout the program, building vocabulary and background knowledge that helps develop good comprehension and reading habits. Students increase their math skills, and expand their writing and communication capabilities.
