In Memory of Harvey W. Roberts, III

Harvey Willis Roberts, III of Norfolk, Virginia was born on December 17,1944 and passed away on October 1, 2016 at Brookdale facility in Virginia Beach. He was preceded in death by his parents Harvey W. Roberts, Jr. and Jessie May R. Roberts of Norfolk and infant daughter Julie.

Harvey was a 1963 graduate of Granby High School where he lettered in basketball " during the Harvey Roberts Era" and was the recipient of the Norfolk Sports Club outstanding Scholastic Basketball Player of the year.

He went on to play basketball on a full scholarship at the University of Richmond.

Upon graduation in 1967 from UR he enlisted in the U. S. Army Officer Candidate Program and served a tour in Vietnam as a 1st. Lieutenant earning two Bronze Stars and the medal for Meritorious Service.

Harvey returned to Norfolk to practice accounting with his father in 1971, where the father and son practice of Roberts and Roberts, CPAs (currently McPhillips, Roberts and Deans) grew and merged over the years.

Always an avid sports fan and skilled athlete, Harvey exchanged his basketball for a tennis racquet and was ranked number 1 in Virginia in the age 50 group, as displayed on his well-known license plate. With the same

passion, he later took up golf, always hoping for a "hole in one" and applying his "creative accounting talents" when keeping score.

In addition to his military service, he was most proud of the 150 therapy visits to Virginia Oncology that he made with his faithful golden retriever, Ryder.

Offering his financial skills as a CPA, Harvey served on civic and cultural boards including the Virginia Opera and Norfolk Forum in addition to many others. He also served for six years on the EVMS Academic Physicians and Surgeons Health Foundation Board and was a member of

the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, the Norfolk Assembly, the Norfolk German Club and the Homestead Resort Golf and Tennis Club.

A lifelong Episcopalian, he was active in many capacities at The Church of the Good Shepherd and served on the Vestry, search, capital campaign and finance committees.

A loving father and grandfather, devoted husband and loyal friend, Harvey is survived by his wife Duane (Dee) Harrell Roberts and his three sons Willis (Will) and wife Mary of Norfolk, Jonathan of Blacksburg, and

Michael and wife Heeya of New York City, his grandchildren River and Summit, and his sister Sara Roberts of Jacksonville, Fl. He is also survived

by sisters-in-law Linda Bachman (Bruce), Elizabeth (Bet) Neale (Mark), Martha Harrell, brother-in-law Randolph (Randy) Harrell (Anne) and many loving nieces and nephews.

A celebration of his life will be held at The Church of the Good Shepherd on Wednesday, October 5 at 1 o'clock in the afternoon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Church of the Good Shepherd, Chesapeake

Bay Academy, Association for Frontal Temporal Dementia (www.aftd.org), or a charity of your choice . The family would like to thank the staff at Brookdale and Westminster Canterbury at Home Hospice for their compassionate care.
