NAS Oceana Color Guard Performs Flag Ceremony for CBA Students

Tuesday, November 10, 2020

In observance of Veterans Day and in honor of those who have so bravely served our country, the students, faculty and staff of Chesapeake Bay Academy (CBA) had the opportunity to participate in an official Flag Ceremony performed by members of the Naval Air Station (NAS) Oceana Color Guard Team.

The event was orchestrated by long-time CBA employee and military family member, Sharon Sharp, working with CBA’s vice-chair of the Board of Trustees and former Commander of NAS Oceana, retired Capt. Lou Schager. Lou reached out to his successor, Captain John Hewitt, to ask for his help with the event and he set the plan into motion with the support of Navy Counselor First Class Petty Officer Tiffani N. Theisen

Before the new flag arrived at CBA, it had the honor of flying over NAS Oceana on Friday, November 6th. On Monday, November 9th, the new flag arrived on campus and was raised by a Naval Color Guard composed of Master-at-Arms First Class Petty Officer Jamie L. Stavrakis and Master-at-Arms First Class Petty Officer Casey A. Cecere. The Color Guard was accompanied by Mass Communications Specialist Second Class Petty Officer Mark T. Mahmod who photographed the event with CBA students, faculty and staff gathered to witness. In addition to the ceremony, the sailors wrote letters to CBA’s students about the significance of Veterans Day. CBA is so proud and appreciative to have received this honor during a very special week for the military community.
